TRAINING EXPERTISE
In the field of training, I have gained an invaluable insight into differing training methods, having been subjected to three entirely different training regimes.
Firstly in Blue Funnel where “cradle to grave” training was carried out, the system was recognized as one of the finest in the world. No officer was expected to ask a crew member to do a job that he himself had not already done, and this lead to an intimate knowledge of the workings of a cargo/passenger liner.
Secondly the SeaSpeed training system was that of an aeronautical environment, blending the aspects of the sea and the aircraft industry together under the strictures of the Civil Aviation Authority and the DTI. As a Hovercraft Commander I was part of the routine training of other SeaSpeed Commanders who joined after me as well as other Captains from around the world. CAA rules required a second crew member to be carried when carrying more than 40 persons, and I undertook the training of cabin staff to carry out this vital role.
Finally my main area of expertise comes from a large amount of time spent training my fellow Marine Pilots in practical conditions and on simulators – both on the Humber and in Peterhead. Having been a prime mover in the forming of the Humber Pilots Limited training programme, I then undertook to lecture on aspects of piloting, ship handling and the use of tugs to my fellow colleagues.
Training pilot launch crews in best approach techniques has also been acquired through my experience handling launches and boats generally. Training launch crews for heavy weather boardings is often overlooked.. and my experience in handling launches gained over many years enables me to offer advice in this area as well.
The need for a regulated, expert, structured pattern of training is extremely important to the safe and efficient operation of any port, and I am able to advise using knowledge acquired from experience gained throughout my varied career.
